Featured Award
John Elder Spirit Award
Celebrating a courageous spirit, a love of cycling, and kindness toward others.
The John Elder Spirit Award honors the life and legacy of John H. Elder IV. John lived with multiple sclerosis and was an accomplished bicycle mechanic and dedicated cyclist, remembered for his generosity, humor, kindness, and the joy he brought to the cycling community.
Following a bicycle accident and a significant MS flare in 2014, John moved closer to family who could support his care. He died from complications of MS in January 2024.
What the award recognizes
The award recognizes a participant in the Bright Spots Adaptive Cycling Adventure who demonstrates:
- A genuine love of cycling
- Courage while facing the challenges of MS
- Kindness toward fellow participants
- Positivity and good humor
- A willingness to encourage others
- The spirit of participation, regardless of speed or ability
"John embodied kindness, generosity, and unwavering care. Despite living with MS, he remained a source of positivity and encouragement."

Florence Nightingale Award Recognition
Supporting innovation and leadership in MS nursing.
The International Organization of Multiple Sclerosis Nurses (IOMSN) Nightingale Awards support research and program ideas led by MS nursing professionals—recognizing those working to improve care, education, wellness, advocacy, and quality of life for people living with MS.
Michelle Keating received Nightingale Award support for programs connected to MS Bright Spots of Hope.
